A 25-metre trimaran for owners who cruise under their own power. It reaches places most boats can't get to in a sensible passage, and it does it at twenty knots. When the wind is fair, it flies a kite from the bow that does real work, and that brings it home if the engine ever stops.

Think of it as the Dashew FPB idea, brought up to date. Twenty knots on one diesel, with a kite for the wind and the way home. Two cabins, by choice.

It's built for a cruising couple who want range and the room to roam.

The vessel

A slender hull, built for passages.

The hull is advanced composite, built to Lloyds SSC. E-glass and vinyl ester, with carbon where the loads are highest, over a PVC foam core. The slender main hull meets little resistance, so it holds a twenty-knot cruise on far less fuel than a normal long-range cruiser burns, and the two amas give it the stability a hull that fine gives up. A hull that slim has to be kept light, eleven tonnes.

Wind

Bow kite

An automated kite flies from the bow. In the right weather it's real propulsion, pulling the boat along off the wind and resting the engine. If the diesel ever stops, it brings you home.

Single diesel

One diesel does the work. Cummins QSB6.7 HD as standard, with a Scania or Caterpillar upgrade for higher speed. About 38 litres an hour at the 20-knot cruise.

Drive

Controllable-pitch prop

The main propeller re-pitches to suit the engine, and feathers nearly edge-on when the kite is flying, so it drives hard under power and barely drags under sail.

Harbour

Electric ama drives

Twin 48-volt motors move you in and out of harbour in silence. They cap at ten knots and never run with the main engine.

Seven kilowatts of solar you can walk on, feeding a 44 kWh house battery in the main hull.

Range to spare

At the 20-knot cruise it covers about 2,100 nautical miles. Ease back to a relaxed 12 knots and it'll do more than 6,000. Most long-range cruisers need nine or ten knots just to reach 2,000. This one does that at twice the speed, with plenty in hand when you slow down. The fuel sits under the cabin soles, and two 600-litre tanks in the amas extend the longest passages. No bladders.

Silent

Capable at both ends

On the open water, one diesel turning a controllable-pitch propeller, with a bow kite that takes over off the wind in a good breeze, easing the fuel or resting the engine. Around an anchorage, twin 48-volt electric drives for silent, clean movement, on feathering ama propellers with little to maintain. Active aft-foil ride control is optional, for roll and pitch.

Layout

Two cabins, on purpose.

Front-access queen berths fore and aft. Two heads. Saloon, galley and inside helm on the main deck, with the engine room and steering aft and below. A six-metre bow with twin anchors and twin windlasses, and no thruster. Two cabins is the design. The boat suits a cruising couple with the odd guest aboard.

One tender, diesel like everything else.

The aft deck above the engine room takes one large tender. The Pacifica 17 diesel jet is the one to fit. It shares fuel with the mothership, seats people like a dayboat, keeps its propeller tucked away, and lands on a beach. A five-metre RIB is the cheaper choice. The deck holds one of them, not both. Kayaks and paddleboards stow forward or on the roof.
